Rather than become disheartened with drawn-out winters, residents old and new embrace the elements. Nearly everyone can swing a mean snow shovel and even recent arrivals head to the outdoor rinks where, with an awkward combination of cheeriness and grim persistence, they overcome their unsteadiness on skates. As for the sticky matter of summer, we just carry on.
Waves of migration roll in and roll out, each leaving an indelible mark while introducing new participants to a remarkable medley. Gone are the days when complexions were pale across the board. To underscore our diversity, in one area less than half a square kilometre in size, 48 languages are spoken. Côte-des-Neiges is where Montreal gets reinvented!
What is the sum and substance of living here?
• For all our cultural, linguistic, racial and religious diversity, we recognize that community is not exclusive, but inclusive.
• The occasional grinch and nudnik notwithstanding, we can laugh together and poke fun at ourselves.
• After a snowstorm or through tough times, we help each other.
• Despite undeniable signs of hardship and adversity, we share an unquenchable joie de vivre.
